Korpiklaani – Tales Along This Road

“Forest clan” remains true to the style set by “Spirit of The Forest” and “Voice of Wilderness” but I dare to say “Tales Along This Road” is even better – the band is in it’s best. There’s no weak songs; guitars, drums, flute, violin, accordion, they all harmonize and sound great. Newest release of Finnish folk-metallists makes the listener wanna dance and jump from first tunes of “Happy Little Boozer”. It’s just impossible to keep feet still! Tempo remains fast till “Midsummer Night”, then slows down at “Tuli Kokko”. Dirty riffs are softened by melodic flute so the whole is both heavy and melodic. “Spring Dance” – the only istrumental track brings back fast tempo and irresistible willingness to dance. Next song, “Under The Sun” is the weakest point of a whole album (not bad though, just not as good as others), bit too monotonous. Then “Korpiklaani”, “Rise”, “Kirki”, “Hide Your Riches” – party goes on – hard to remain motionless again. Best song – hard to point one, maybe “Vakirauta”. Whole album is very energizing and makes mood better. It should be played at wedding parties instead of shitty disco. A must-have for folk lovers. The only bad thing is that it’s hard to dance when you’re limited by the lenght of headphones wire (unfortunately my family doesn’t share my musical taste, so I can listen without headphones only when I’m alone at home)...

Feel tired and thirsty, gotta get some beer...

Back In Action

Whoah, it has been around half a year since I posted here the last time... Been caught up with my band and all that stuff has kept me pretty busy. But still, alive and kicking, ready to do some blogging :D

In this post I'll recommend you to some Finnish metal bands. Every band has a brief description and a recommended album to check out.

Here we go:

Alghazanth
Chaotic, yet melodic black metal. Fast drumming, keyboard backings, hard riffing. Also see Catamenia. Recommended: Osiris-Typhon Unmasked

Amoral
Technical Melodic Death Metal. What more do I need to say? Kickass. Reminds me of Psycroptic and Necrophagist because of the inventive guitar work. Recommended: Wound Creations

ArthemesiA
Kai Hahto anyone? Melodic black metal, hyperfast at times because of Hahto's unbelievable drumming talent. Nice guitar melodies. Recommended: Devs-Iratvs

Behexen
Raw, dirty, cold and moderately paced primitive black metal from the icy Finland. For the fans of oldskool primitive bm. Recommended: Rituale Satanum

Catamenia
Very fast, melodic, chaotic and icy black metal. This is one band to check out. Recommended: Eternal Winter's Prophecy and the newest, Winternight Tragedies

De Lirium's Order
Heavy riffing, some melodies and even more riffing. Great shit. For the fans of older Gothenburg sound mixed with brutal dm aspects. Too bad the singer got shot a week ago... Recommended: Victim No. 52

Deathbound
Grindcore/Brutal Death Metal splatter. Great for the enthusiasts of speed to the utmost limits. Not for the faint of heart. Recommended: To Cure The Sane With Insanity

Diablo
Melodic Death Metal at it's best. Semi-clean singing, very progressive drumming, awesome riffing, it's all here. Check it out. Recommended: Eternium

Enochian Crescent
Great, very melodic black metal. Shrieking singer. This one is a must also. Recommended: Telocvovim

And more to come...

Metalmania 2005

Metalizer has been longing for an update since October. High time to overcome laziness, especially that there’s good reason for update.

The biggest metal festival in Central Europe. Almost 14 hours of live music – that’s how I have spent last Saturday. Early wake up, train journey to Katowice, short walk, and we (me, my boyfriend, and yet 3 people from tmp forum) came to Spodek – The Temple Of Metal, how one of Turbo members described it few hours later. Btw, spodek means saucer, and so is the shape of that building.

Bands were performing on 2 stages – we focused mainly on the big one. First to play was Darzamat – polish gothic band. They sounded much heavier than on albums, which did them imo good. Pity they played only 20 minutes.
Before Dies Irae people started to scream: “Napierdalać napierdalać” – no idea how to translate this beautiful word, it describes the style of bands like Dies Irae or Napalm Death, but that explanation doesn’t render that term wholly. People went crazy, moshing, mills and so on. Funny thing - vocalist said: satan doesn’t sleep, I hope you neither (it was quite early, about 11 a.m).
Next band – mysterious ANJ from Russia. Suppose nobody knew them before – me neither. Didn’t find any mp3’s, they aren’t even listed in encyclopaedia. The music was melodic, clear and quite pleasant for ear. I liked especially “Set on Fire” and songs sung in russian. Performance was accompanied by pyrotechnical effects, we felt fire’s heat on our faces. Negative impression – one of guitarists chewing gum – his jaw worked almost as intensive as his hands and guitar. But generally – successful debut. And, the good thing was, not too many people watched ANJ so I came with my man close to the stage (2nd row) and we stayed there till end of Katatonia show.
We had great view on vikings from Amon Amarth – they do really look like vikings! Especially vocalist (very long beard). He came on the stage with a can of Tyskie (great advertise for that beer :)) The crowd behind started to press on us, so I had to watch out for boy’s who was standing before me elbows, which were sticking into my stomach. And we had to watch out for people flying above our heads. The performance was imo the second best one of that day :)
Slight change of climate – time for more calm and atmospheric Katatonia. Public calmed down (only one guy flew above our heads), except few girlies who screamed their throats out like they were at HIM concert or something :/ Don’t know Katatonia’s discography too well, but I liked the performance, they seemed to sound bit heavier than on albums. After that we took a lunch break (we got pretty hungry), ate sandwiches and went to so called “Pub under Spodek” where we got frozen to the marrow, as it was separated from the outside only with piece of foil. So we drank our beers fast and came back inside.
On the stage Dark Funeral was ending their performance – I’m not into that kind of music so I didn’t regret missing it. The Haunted also didn’t take my fancy – totally unmelodic stuff. Next band – Pain – was expected impatiently by some of us, but for me and my bf it’s far too electronic and techno-like. And I wanted to see Hell-Born (performing on the small stage at the same time). That was a biggest dissapointment for me – they sounded much worse than on CD’s, all melody and climate had dissapeared somewhere leaving only chaotic chaff.
We walked to the opposite side of Spodek were artists were signing CD’s and posters – it was Apocalyptica’s turn, but the queue was so long that we gave up, cos we didn’t want to miss next band – Arcturus. I managed to get almost at the barrier again:) They needed long time to prepare their equipment, but eventually they came. The vocalist seemed to be slightly drunk as he behaved kinda weird – jumped waving his legs, falling on his knees and so on. Or maybe he’s always that way :) Anyways he presented wide range of vocal and the the music was great as I expected – not exagerrating Arcturus was the most avantgarde band of this year’s Metalmania.
Next hour belonged to Turbo – veterans of polish heavy metal. Despite they’re not the youngest (the band was formed 25 years ago) they didn’t forget how to play. As for me they could use less of flickering, white, eye-fucking lights – my eyes hurt many hours after.
Next band is something for you Mosher – Napalm Death. Powerful and ass-kicking, though too extreme for me. Only after they had finished we ran in the stage direction to have good view on Apocalyptica - the band we were most anxious to. Many other people also had this idea so we got only into 3rd row. And there was a big guy before us blocking 80% of view :/ Finally cello-kings appeared on stage and gave genious performance. They played some Metallica covers like “Enter Sandman”, “Fight Fire With Fire”, “Master Of Puppets”, “Nothing Else Matters” as well as their own compositions like “Bittersweet” and “Betrayal” from newest album, and at the end – my favourite Grieg’s composition “Hall Of The Mountain King”. Pity they played for such a short time, or maybe it’s my subjective impression. But I certainly would like to hear more Apocalyptica even instead of “the star of the evening” who was expected by at least one fourth of audience – the world’s ugliest band, how they were announced (what a great self-criticism :)).
Certainly their show was dark and satanic as their fans expected :D All of members had elegant make ups. Cradle Of Filth’s performance resembled circus – weird creatures on the stage, acrobat doing evolutions on the rope above the stage and Danni as a clown :) Of course he showed whole possibilities of his voice – he was screeching like if he was hit in the balls. Due to one hour lag which occured during whole festival we had to leave after 3 or 4 songs cos 0:50 we had a train and we didnt want to miss it.
Summing up I’m glad I was there, tho my ears just stopped hurting. Top 3: Apocalyptica, Amon Amarth, Arcturus. Hope next year's Metalmania will be even better as it’s gonna be 20th edition.

Heh, that’s my longest post so far so here is gonna be its end :)

Therion live in Kraków

Allright, had some sleep so time to give an account of yesterday’s evening. I’ll remember it forever. I had high expectations of it and the Beast certainly didn’t let me down. But let’s start from the begining:

First to act was Trial Of Tears. I don’t know their music (hard to get it anywhere) but imagined that it was gothic. To my surprise it proved to be some heavier, growl based stuff. Pity I only heard 2 songs (came bit late). They played quite good, but became totally dimmed by next support – norwegian Tristania, who started gently with Aphelion, followed by World Of Glass (one of my favorite Tristania songs) when audience went crazy. Thousand of people moshing, isn’t it beautiful? Accidentaly I got into the eclipse of the mill and got thrown somewhere back. Musicians seemed to be surprised to have such hot reception. They have been playing not whole hour, after they finished, started waiting for the main course – THE-RION, THE-RION coming from thousand of throats. They didn’t come so soon, we had to wait. But it was worth of it. Light went off and silence fell for a while, then we heard tones of Blood Of Kingu (not to be confused with Vader’s song with the same title) and rage began. Waving hair and sweatened bodies all around. I had almost no influence where I’ll be in next second, was moved by the crowd in all directions. Pity I couldn’t mosh too intensive (glasses :/ Next time gotta get myself contact lenses) With every next song atmosphere was getting hotter and hotter.
Musicians were engaged in their work and seemed to enjoy that they’re doing. As always good technically (Kristian’s solos, mmmm:)) Mats Leven (heavy-metal singer on Lemuria and Sirus B) showed his possibilities, not fully revealed on albums. The setlist was chosen correctly – contained songs of almost all albums, except first three (pity, I’d love to hear Baal Reginon or Symphony Of The Dead live). Fans were singing along. For bis they played 2 covers – Mercyful Fate’s "Black Funeral" and Motorhead’s "Iron Fist" (Cults Of The Shadow and To Mega Therion I don’t consider as bises, guess they were planned ;)). They also had great contact with an audience. Whole show was absolutely worthy of 75 PLN, the best ever spent money. Now I’m tired, but happy :D Will have the story to tell my grandchildren, if I’ll have them :)

And, let’s not forgot the crew from forum TMP with which I was there. I had really great time with them before and after the show. Hope to see you guys and girls some time again \m/

Therion show

Therion show was FUCKING GREAT \m/ Gonna write more soon :)

Unimaginably stupid and annoying songs

Today I am bored. Had to do something about it, so I posted this. I Gathered some annoying, stupid and ignorant songs that make you want to cry whenever you hear these. Enjoy.

Damage Control - Seize
This song makes me wanna hang myself. Angst-ridden punk with a singer that hasn't gone through his (or her) puberty. Gives me the chills.. hrrr. Amazing that shit like this band have got theirselves a record deal.

All Limp Bizkit songs
What can I say. This is just a pile of steaming shit. Numetal for kids, and a monkey as a singer. Great, just fucking great.

All Cradle Of Filth songs
Whoa. What is this, is someone trying to stuff a gerbil into a printer? No? Oh wait, it's Dani Filth singing. (S)He sounds like a little boy that has been hit in the balls with a monkey wrench. And he looks gay, too. As do all of the bandmembers. And the music is just............better not say it.

Bloodhound Gang - "Track No. 20"
Didn't remember the real name of the song, that will do for now. Onwards. This song features sounds from a gay porn movie (sucking sounds, slurping, "mmmh, I like to suck this", "oh yeah", "this is great") and a gay porn music in the background, so that makes this song......gayporn? Exactly. Stay away. "This is great"....not.

Orbital - Whole "Octane"-album
You gotta hear this to believe. Electronical hum, buzzing, some kind of shitty laughable melody in the background... This is not music. This is something else. Picture a UFO landing to your backyard. This is what the music is like. Now imagine what it feels like when the aliens insert probes to your cornhole and laugh their skinny asses off ass you dwell in agony. This is how it feels like to listen to the album.

Evanescence - All songs
This is maybe the most overhyped band ever. And overestimated. The singer sounds kinda good, but this is as good as it gets. All songs are just same songs with different tempo or slight alterations to the melody. Reminiscent of Linkin Park. Yuck. Plus the piano sections just suck some major ass.

More to come. Stay tuned.

Demonoid – Riders Of The Apocalypse – Therion II?

Before I listened to this album I had heard a lot about it and my curiosity was growing. It probably wouldn’t be so, if I hadn’t known that Demonoid’s crew consists almost wholly of Therion members. But while Therion is mainly a vision of composer Christofer Johnsson, Demonoid was an idea of Niemann brothers and was meant as something different from Therion’s nowadays style – pure death/trash with drop of black influences, no orchestra, no choirs. Suppose my feelings about this album are affected by the knowledge who stands behind it. I wonder how it would be without this knowledge, would I guess who plays it or not?

Now about the most important thing – music. Willing or not, I looked at it through a Therion’s prism and searched for likeness. Certainly it is much different that latest Therion’s releases. It bases mainly on sound of guitars and drums and Chris’ growl. Guitars sound as they should – heavy, fresh and juicy, both amazing riffs and background. Drummer Rickard Evesand (from Chimaira, played also in Soilwork) is in good form, especially in the songs “Firestorms”, “Wargods” and “Death” where he hits his equipment really fast. And lets not forget about the vocal – dirty, brutal growl. Every element fits to each other, building harmonious whole, kinda symphony, although it is quite far from symphonic metal.

However, Therion spirit is perceptible, especially in “Evocation”, and the beginning of the “Arrival Of The Horseman”, that bring on mind earlier albums of masters of sympho-metal. It manifests itself in monumentality and general mood, “Evocation” also features a bit of clean vocals (male and female) what even more increases similarity to ”Lepaca Kliffoth”. The whole is kept in reasonable speed, except two tracks: mentioned above “Evocation” and “14th Century Plague” – slow tempo songs, almost a ballads, yet not deprived of certain heaviness. There are no filler tracks – each song is in it’s place and passages between them are fluent. To be honest, I’m listening this album even more frequently that Therion now.

10 out of 10 points. A must-have for earlier-Therion fans and not only.

Summary:

The Good:
+ fast, powerful, melodic piece of solid death/trash,
+ no weak songs,
+ technically skilled musicians,
+ everything fits together

The Bad:
- ends too fast

Shitty Songs Of Great Bands

Even the greatest bands (MDB and Anathema belong to my absolute favs list) have some worse days when they produce something straying from their normal level. And this is what this post is gonna be about. Here are some examples:

My Dying Bride – almost whole “34.788%...Complete” album
Suppose it was meant as a joke. Not funny, though :/ There are many moments when sounds you hear resemble techno more than metal. As MDB have tons of really great stuff I can forgive them this one shitty album

Anathema – Dreaming – The Romance
Begins like intro. Or mebbe outro, as it’s the last song on “Serenades” album. But outro should last approximately 2 minutes. Next minutes of this song don’t bring anything new so you are waiting impatiently for the end which is not coming. But all things have their end and so has this song. Guess when – after 10 minuts? No :/ 15? Miss again. It lasts more then 23 minutes of pure boredom. Congrats if you hadn’t fallen asleep.

...And Oceans – New Model World
This breaks all the bounds of decency. Tormenting, worst kind of disco shit. I’m simply not able to listen to it till the end without fast forwarding. My ears are just a way too delicate. Were the band members drunk or drug affected while recording it or what?

Nifelheim – Pod Smoczym Ogonem
You probably don’t know this band (not to be confused with black metal band from Sweden, afaik they're going to change their name soon). Maybe some day I’ll write more about them, they are promising. But back to the topic – this song visibly strays from the debut album (“Gniew Smoka”) level. Almost 4 minutes of falsing flute and pub’s sounds. Completely needless entry on the album, same as HIM's cover "Join me", awfuly doleful (singer sings like if he was dying).

Galadriel – Sex In The Underworld
This slovakian band is my latest discovery. Don’t know them well yet (2 albums listened so far), but it has great chances to join my favs list – dark doom, melodic, both clean and guttural vocals, with visible influences of classic music. However when I heard this song I felt disgusted. What an awful beat at the backgroung! It makes the song good for a disco, but not for gentle ears of metalheads!

That’s all what comes into my mind at the moment, if you have other ideas you’re welcome to leave comments. Till the next time!
